SHTE Värmebehandlingskonferens: Nitrex’s Approach to Superior Brake Rotor Performance

Nitrex will be participating in the Swedish Heat Treating Conference from November 6-7, 2024, in Eskilstuna, Sweden. This Nordic industry event brings together professionals from a wide range of sectors that rely on heat treatment in their manufacturing processes. Experts in the field will connect, share knowledge, and delve into the latest research, best practices, and transformative technologies that are shaping the future of heat treatment across various applications.

The SHTE is dedicated to suppliers and buyers of heat treatment equipment in the steel and engineering industries, focusing on promoting technical competence, supporting environmentally friendly practices, and advocating for standardization.

In alignment with SHTE’s objectives, this year at the conference, Nitrex will spotlight the “New Generation of Nitrocarburized and Post-Oxidized Brake Discs.” This presentation will emphasize the critical role these advanced treatments play in improving the performance of automotive brake rotors, particularly in light of the EU’s forthcoming Euro 7 emissions standard. This regulation is set to enforce stringent limits on particulate emissions from vehicles, making it essential to address the corrosion challenges associated with traditional cast iron brake discs, which are prone to rust when not in use. This rust leads to severe corrosion and accelerated wear.

Through our advanced Nitreg®-C nitrocarburizing process and the innovative Smart-ONC® technology, attendees will discover how to achieve exceptional corrosion resistance and significantly extend the lifespan of brake rotors.

Key takeaways from the presentation will include:

  • Discover how ferritic nitrocarburizing and various white layer combinations enhance the corrosion resistance of grey cast iron (GCI) brake discs.
  • Understand the influence of white layer thickness, porosity, and post-oxidized layer thickness on corrosion resistance.
  • Gain insights into mitigating corrosion mechanisms such as graphitic and pitting corrosion, especially in the context of increasing wear rates in rear brake systems.
  • Explore how different machining methods and carbon contents affect corrosion resistance.
  • Learn about the effectiveness of innovative post-oxidation treatments like Smart-ONC® in improving corrosion resistance by creating a protective barrier against damage and failure.

We look forward to meeting you there!
