In non-alloyed steels and cast irons nitriding produces practically only a compound layer composed of gamma‘ or epsilon+gamma' nitrides. Surface hardness is not very high (HV1 = 320-400 for mild steel, 400-580 for cast iron), but sufficient to considerably improve resistance to wear and galling in conditions of insufficient lubrication.
